As springtime blooms, so does allergy season—and for many, that means sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and a never-ending search for relief. As a pharmacist, I often counsel patients seeking fast, effective solutions to seasonal allergies. Here are some tips to help you manage this allergy season:
1. Start Early—Before Symptoms Hit
Don’t wait until you’re miserable. If you have a history of seasonal allergies, begin taking allergy medications and using nasal sprays a couple of weeks before pollen peaks.
2. Take medications
Over-the-counter antihistamines can effectively reduce allergy symptoms. Consider adding a corticosteroid nasal spray to help with nasal congestion and/or post-nasal drip. Ask your pharmacist which combination is right for you.
3. Limit Pollen Exposure
Check daily pollen counts and plan your outdoor activities accordingly. Keep windows closed during high pollen days, and shower or change clothes after being outside to reduce indoor allergen exposure.
4. Watch Air Quality Alerts
Poor air quality can worsen allergy symptoms and trigger asthma flare-ups. On high-alert days, limit time outdoors, especially if you have respiratory conditions. Many weather apps and websites provide real-time air quality updates—stay informed and plan ahead!
5. Keep Indoor Air Clean
Regularly vacuum to reduce indoor allergens.
6. Rinse It Out
A saline nasal rinse or neti pot can help flush out allergens trapped in your nasal passages.
7. Know When to Seek Help
If over-the-counter options aren’t working, don’t suffer in silence. Seek referral to an allergist and even consider allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) which can help treat your allergies.
Allergy season can be frustrating, but with a little preparation and the right tools, you don’t have to let it slow you down. Your pharmacist is a great resource for personalized advice, don’t hesitate to ask!
