Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters is a musical for the whole family to experience now through October 30, 2025.
Adapted by Taryn Janelle from the play “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Play” by Karen Abbott and based on the beloved book by John Steptoe. The play is told in the rich tradition of African folktales, in a sweeping, musical tale of kindness, inner strength, and the true test of character. Running at the Nashville Children’s Theater, the play features many local artists, making this a beautiful homage to the diverse creative makeup found here in Nashville.
“The picture book that this musical is adapted from has been a cherished part of the upbringing of so many folks. John Steptoe, the author/illustrator of the original tale, is unique in that he was a Black man who made his career telling and drawing Black stories, featuring Black characters. So many local artists worked and committed their time and resources into telling this story,” shares Jon Royal, the Play Director. “As a Black artist who grew up in Nashville, seeing shows at Nashville Children’s Theatre, I cherish any and every opportunity to tell a story about us.”
Set beneath the wide Zimbabwean sky, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters tells the story of a man and his two daughters – both beautiful, but with two different hearts. The new adaptation brings Steptoe’s award-winning story to life with color, rhythm, heart and new music.
You can purchase your tickets at Nashville Children’s Theatre and get ready for your kids to experience a treat. The theatre also provides helpful family tips to ensure your kids are ready and prepared to for an enjoyable day at the play.
