This Meet the Urbaanite is a part of a special series in partnership with the William Edmondson Arts + Culture Festival

Amanda Ewing is a locally-based violin maker and the first Black female luthier on record in the nation. After leaving a role in hospitality, Amanda decided to seek out what truly made her happy. During this period, she rediscovered her love for string music. This discovery sparked joy and would turn into her creating custom string instruments for others. She has displayed at WE Fest in the kid’s tent and did a Salsa-dance participation activity. Learn more about Amanda!

Tell us what you are creating in Nashville: In Nashville, I am joyfully crafting beautiful wooden string instruments that embody both passion and heritage. Each violin reflects the rich traditions of Black craftswomanship, celebrating my culture and honoring the artistry of music. I also have the privilege of mentoring aspiring luthiers, growing a vibrant community where creativity and cultural expression can thrive and flourish unharmed.

What inspires you: My inspiration comes from the vibrant stories of Black artists who have shaped the creative world. I draw strength from their legacies and the power to connect people across generations. Nature also inspires me; the curves of a violin mirror the beauty found in the world around us, reminding me of the harmony that exists in life.

Coffee, Lunch, brunch or happy hour: Brunch! There’s something magical about enjoying a good meal while surrounded by fabulous friends and groovy tunes.

Describe Nashville in 3 words: Vibrant, soulful, and welcoming.

Imani’s work is a beautiful reminder of the power of dance to connect us and elevate our cultural narratives.

It’s a vibrant event at the Farmer’s Market that celebrates Black entrepreneurship and creativity, showcasing a diverse array of local artists and artisans. The energy there is incredible, and I always leave feeling inspired by the talent and community spirit. It’s a place where culture thrives, and it’s wonderful to see our stories and artistry come to life!
