For Marlyncia Pierce (aka Mar) of Marmade Design Co., her journey into calligraphy began with a simple need for a creative escape. A decade ago, while navigating a demanding career in media, she sought a hobby that would let her explore her artistic side. Despite feeling like she “couldn’t really draw or paint,” she had always enjoyed playing with words and letters. This curiosity led her to a calligraphy class, and the rest is history.

What sparked your interest in calligraphy?

Ten year ago, I was looking for a creative outlet outside my day job in media. I’d always been drawn to art and design, but couldn’t really draw or paint. However, I liked doodling words and letters, so I took a calligraphy class. From there, my passion for the artform grew. I practiced constantly, found the calligraphy community online and learned different styles from traditional dip pen copperplate to digital lettering. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with the process of creating beautiful handwritten art.
When did you decide to turn your hobby into a business?
The transition from hobby to business happened naturally over time. I started sharing my calligraphy online and with family and friends, and soon people started requesting custom pieces, for their weddings or gift exchanges. I realized how much joy and value calligraphy could bring to others. Now, I balance working my full-time job and running my business as a calligraphy artist. I get to work on creative projects from event signage, teaching workshops, to doing live calligraphy for brand activations and product launches.
What advice would you give those seeking to find a hobby outside of their current day-to-day work?
Explore activities that spark curiosity and joy for you — things that have been on your lists to try. Look up workshops in your area or search for free tutorials online to do in your spare time. Be open to experimenting, don’t worry about getting it right the first try. Embrace being a beginner. You always have permission to reset and try something new that aligns with your interests.
