The Frist Art Museum is a true gem in Nashville that provides an escape for locals, travelers, culture seekers and anyone seeking to explore something new. Traditionally, museums often seem intimidating and leave people not knowing how to start or what to do once they arrive. So, we decided to check in with a few locals who love art and getting outside of their comfort zones to ensure you make the most of your first/next visit to Nashville’s Art Museum.
BYOM – Bring your Open Mind – The Frist offers an eclectic mix of visual art through its ever changing exhibitions, events, and learning spaces. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, prefer events or intimate settings, or like traditional art or experiential art: there’s really something for everyone. Additionally, the artists showcased are diverse, and I’ve found the art (and artists) to be captivating and inspiring as opposed to intimidating and unrelatable. Check their calendar to stay up to date on the exhibits and events, and I’m sure you’ll find something that piques your interest. – Malaka Watson, local attorney + blogger
Make It A Self-Care Day – The Frist is the ultimate self-care day for any Nashvillian from nights filled with music to its raw and interactive exhibits to the great food, and smiles from the passing faces! Many come to see and learn about art and the world around them, and I also believe all leave seeing and learning more about themselves. – Monchiere Holmes-Jones, local entrepreneur
Indulge At The Cafe – The Frist has an amazing cafe with great salad and sandwich options perfect for lunch or dinner. Grab a snack before you take in the exhibits to avoid distraction. I suggest their delicious soup, maybe some wine:) and a must try are their homemade potato chips with specialty dipping sauce. You can also grab a bite after viewing or just pop in for lunch. – Kirbee Miller, local chef
Don’t Miss The Live Music – If you’re there on a Thursday or Friday evening when the Frist is open until 9:00 p.m., make sure to check out the live music in the café from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. It is perfect for a solo trip, date night, or grab the gals for a fun GNO (Girls Night Out). Truly all ages can enjoy. – Sarah Patton, local creative
Bring The Kiddos – The Martin ArtQuest at the Frist is an innovative, on-going exhibit catering to kids of all ages. The newly redesigned attraction is located on the top level of the museum and allows kids to explore their inner creativity with interactive workstations plus new exhibits that come through the gallery are incorporated to ensure everyone is involved in the art exploration. – Janet Barnes, local professional + Mom of two
Bonus Tip – Wear comfortable shoes, repeat wear comfortable shoes and don’t get in a hurry. There is so much rich content and so many amazing stories that you’ll need intentional time to absorb it all.
