Dirt Road Baby is a solo exhibition by Nashville photographer, LeXander Bryant gives a beautiful, intimate look into the everyday Southern Black Family life. Running now through December 20, 2025 at Red Arrow Gallery, this exhibition is sure to evoke beautiful conversations and reverence for a community we can see ourselves in.
For Bryant, Dirt Road Baby, is a meditation on southern identity. This body of work features all new photographs that were taken in LeXander’s hometown of Jackson and Walker Springs, Alabama. For LeXander, the South is more than just a place; it’s a rhythm, a memory, a lineage, and a portal to the wider world. These dirt roads serve as both a map and a memory, sharing his path while grounding him in the spirit of home.

In Dirt Road Baby, Bryant returns to his hometown of Jackson, Alabama—a small community in proximity to Mobile, Alabama, home to fewer than 5,000 people. His images trace the familiar markers of Black Southern culture: the church as a sanctuary and gathering place, watermelon as both symbol and sustenance, and customized cars gleaming with chrome or gold rims as expressions of pride, individuality, and craftsmanship. Included in the catalog is an exhibition essay by C. Rose Smith, Assistant Curator of Photography at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
Bryant debuted his first solo museum exhibition, Forget Me Nots, at Nashville’s Frist Art Museum in 2022 and was featured in Forbes for his exhibition there. His second museum exhibition is scheduled to open at The Huntsville Museum of Art in Spring 2026. Notably, his photography has been collected by the North Dakota Museum of Art. LeXander also brought to life this year’s Urbaanite’s Nashville’s Not Just Country series through his photography.
