Did you know that Nashville’s nickname, “Music City,” has nothing to do with country music? In the 1800s, the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University (a school for freed slaves) put Nashville on the map during their around the world tour. Upon playing for the Queen of England, the queen stated the Fisk Jubilee Singers must come from the “Music City.”

Hi Ashley! As I was reminiscing about my teenage years (I am 84 yrs. now) in Detroit, MI, I recalled singing in the House of Diggs Radio Choir. Our director, Melvin Dupree, was said to have been a member of the Fisk University Jubilee Singers. I searched the Internet and this posting came up. I think the first gentleman on the left of the photo is Mr. Dupree!! He was an elder back then (around 1958). Thank you so much for your posting!
